Botulinum toxin treatment is effective for wrinkle reduction.

Botulinum toxin treatment works by injecting botulinum toxin into targeted muscles to inhibit muscle contraction, thereby smoothing wrinkles. The effects typically last for approximately 2–3 months.

Botulinum toxin acts at the synapses of the neuromuscular junction, inhibiting muscle contraction. By temporarily paralyzing the targeted muscles, wrinkles caused by repetitive muscle movement are smoothed over time. Botulinum toxin not only relaxes muscles by inducing temporary paralysis but also leads to a reduction in muscle volume over time. When hypertrophy of the masseter muscle results in a square jawline or a broader facial appearance, or when enlargement of the temporalis muscle causes prominent temples, botulinum toxin injections can reduce muscle bulk, creating a slimmer and softer facial contour. Although the salivary glands are not muscles, a similar volume-reducing effect can occur following botulinum toxin injections. Therefore, if enlargement of the parotid glands (located below the ears) or the submandibular glands (located beneath the jaw) contributes to a square jawline or a larger-looking face, botulinum toxin treatment may likewise help achieve a more refined and balanced facial appearance.
