There is a well-known paper by Dr. Hamermesh titled “Beauty and the Labor Market,” which examines the relationship between physical appearance and income in the real world. This influential study has been cited more than 2,000 times and has had a significant impact across multiple fields. The findings are striking. According to the paper, individuals were divided into three groups based on physical appearance—below average, average, and above average—and their average annual incomes were compared. The results showed that individuals with above-average appearance earned approximately 10–15% higher salaries than those with below-average appearance. This pattern was observed consistently across occupations, regardless of job type. In economics, this phenomenon is now referred to as the “Beauty Premium.” Of course, appearance alone does not guarantee success beyond one’s abilities. However, an appearance that is consistently cared for through effort can enhance personal confidence and self-esteem, which in turn has a meaningful impact on social interactions and professional life. This is why Terrace Clinic believes that consistent skin care is a form of effective self-development.
