According to one study, appearance management behaviors were traditionally perceived as something one was simply “born with,” but in recent years, a sociocultural perspective has emerged in which appearance is understood as something that can be developed and maintained. As a result, appearance management has come to be recognized as an act of self-construction, and research suggests that this can have positive effects on children as well. In a study involving 350 parents, a positive correlation was found between a mother’s appearance management behaviors and her child’s level of happiness. Interestingly, the mother’s growth mindset was shown to moderate this effect. In other words, when mothers demonstrated efforts toward self-care and continuous personal growth—including outward development—this had a positive influence on their children’s happiness.
